Gram's storyHans Gram operated a dry goods store in the Russell House Hotel with P.H. Miller. P.H. Miller lived in a slightly more modest home at 216 Caroline Street. Their store sold a variety of foods in the “pre-refrigerator” era of groceries and markets. A large part of their inventory likely consisted of whole grains, dried oats, and dried beans. The hotel was fairly close to his home and was one of the first of its kind in Neenah. Below is a Christmas card that was distributed to customers of the dry goods store in 1890.

Hans Gram's home on Wisconsin Avenue was built in 1887 where he lived with his wife and children. Hans Gram was born in 1840 in Denmark and came to America in 1872, settling in Neenah. His daughters, Anna and Petra lived in the house continuously until their deaths in 1952 and 1967 respectively. Hans Gram’s home is iconic for its architecture and very distinct look. It has a style that is identified with the Victorian Italianate period of construction. Buildings similar to the Hans Gram house can be found at 419 Church Street, 120 E. Franklin Street, and 105 N. Park Avenue.
